HAND ME DOWN HEART
I have a hand-me-down heart
It’s been used over and over
I don’t linger long
In front of a mirror
Afraid of who
I’ll find there.
I have a hand-me-down heart
It’s been used over and over
So I collect my trophies
Memories pasted on the mirror
And look back
And continue looking back.
HERE I AM BUT THERE YOU WENT
Here I am
And here I’ll stay
From your presence
I’ll never stray.
But I’ll let you
Have me when
You want me
Though I’m blue
When you’ve got
Someone else with you.
SOLITARY CONFINEMENT
My hearts been in solitary confinement
A padded room its protection
Everyone has a private jail
Mine is abstinence from intimacy
Its time to reseal my weeping wound
The one they call a bleeding heart
It’ll take something more substantial
Than a band0aid or even tourniquet
Perhaps just incase it in cement.
I sob so hard not one tear leaves my eyes
I cry so loud not one sound passes my lips
My soul seeps through my eyes
And my back is bowed from the weight of it all.
DEAD HEART WALKING
Take my heart off of Death Row
Its been there way too long
Stand guard over it
And protect it from pain
My love has been behind bars
For way too long
So strip away my shackles
And I will share with you…
Don’t hang my heart,
Or give it too great a shock,
Don’t want any lethal injections either,
Just free its chains, unlock its door,
And issue a stay of execution…
LEAVE TAKINGS
You have come
Like all the others
And once you learn me
Your knowledge will
Drive you away.
Here you will learn
To love and be loved
You will see something In yourself
You have never seen before
And then you will want
Others to see it in you.
Then you will take a piece of me with you
My body is a precut pie,
A portion to be given to each passing lover,
A snack for the road.
But each lover must dump
Some more filling in the crust
Before heading out once again.
I am only a lover
Don’t crush me in the door
On your way out.
COMES THE DAWN
After awhile you learn the subtle difference
Between holding a hand and chaining a soul
And you learn that love doesn’t mean leaning on someone
And company doesn’t mean security.
You learn that kisses aren’t contracts
And presents aren’t promises
And you begin to accept your defeats
With your head up and your eyes open,
With the grace of a human
Not the grief of a child.
You learn to build all your roads
On today because tomorrow’s ground
Is too uncertain for foundations
And futures have a way of falling down.
You learn that even sunshine burns
If you get too much of it.
So you plant your own garden
And decorate your own soul,
Instead of waiting for someone to bring you flowers
And you learn that you really can endure,
That you really are strong,
And you really do have worth.
GRIEF
Losing a
mother leaves a big hole in your heart
But all the loving memories will never depart.
You'll miss her warm comforts for years to come
And always be in debt for the gift of her wisdom.
Because of her selfless devotion, she's gone to that better place
To sprout angel wings made of white lace.
Now she can watch over you, so
Quiet be and you will hear soft and low
Her voice saying that she is near
To take away your fear,
To wipe away a tear,
And always to hold you very, very dear.
